I like how the room is feminine and classic, yet my dad wouldn’t feel like it’s too frilly for him to hang out in. It has light colors that help keep it bright, but not too distracting. Admittedly, it’s more my style than my mom’s. The first version I sent had an image of one of my favorite chandeliers. So I switched it up a bit. Maybe I just got carried away in the stuff that has caught my eye lately.

Where do you find inspiration for your space and your life?

Her apartment bedroom is 11 feet by 13 feet, with a queen bed. She wanted furniture, but not a lot would fit in the space. As for places she likes, she shops at Target, World Market, Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn. Her budget was $1,000 to $1,500. Check out some inspiration pictures she sent:

The key part to a mood board is finding a look and inspiration. So while putting together specific items results in a shopping list, it’s also something you can go off of and find your own similar items. For example, the blue vases can be any blue vases, not just those specific ones. The dresser is also a classic shape.  If you’re wanting to save money and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you can refinish one in a similar style found from a thrift store or family member.

Ikea has great prices on frames, ranging from $3 to $39 for the Virserum collection. Of course, collecting different frames at thrift stores or from your current collection is even cheaper! To keep with the pop of yellow, I thought it best to paint the center frame. It could also be interesting to do one of the non-center ones in yellow. But the fewer that are painted, the more of a “pop” it makes.

Since you’re traveling, you’ll probably be spending more money than you expected. So, I thought I would try my best to keep the living room pieces affordable as well as accessible. Just pretend that floor pillow/pouf is the red one in the back. Or maybe a red damask. (Speaking of poufs, I really want to make a knitted pouf, even though they’re probably not as chic as they were when they first came out.)

Have your travels ever impacted your home decor?

Lately, I’ve been itching to decorate our patio. Right now, there’s an empty pot that is shaped like a wine barrel and our grill that we haven’t put back into our storage — not very glamorous. In putting together this mood board, I just started picking out what appealed to me and see if it went together. That’s what I call eclectic!

I started out with the chairs — very close to my signature color — and then totally fell for the modern metal table. Add in a Pottery Barn wicker bar table, potted plants at varying heights, some punchy accessories and you’ve got yourself a look!

The above pieces are great, but the stand-outs cost a pretty penny. So I put together this patio on a budget that still has elements we’re wanting.

This whole look will set you back just under $300. And chances are, you may already have a throw and fun tumblers hanging around. Even spraypainting a coffee can or two will get the same look of the planters.

Matt was a little nervous about the idea of having animal print things in our home. The colors are pretty darn neutral and the pattern isn’t really severe, I told him. Plus, I love animal print. Always have, always will. Maybe it’s because of the one in Empire Records, one of my favorite movies ever. (Here’s a video clip featuring the couch and a thrilling chase scene. My friend Jillian [hey J!] and I would watch it over and over and talk about getting an apartment with a leopard print couch.)

So here’s what I came up with, It’s even a little tame considering I could add even more prints/animal inspirations.
