Simple Home Updates

Over the last few months I’ve done a few home updates. They’re small, but overall our place is feeling more homey. Some spaces still need some sprucing, but right now it’s all about little changes bit by bit.

First was just a simple task of restyling my husband’s dresser top. While I’m OK with showing you the “before” pictures of my messes, I decided that he probably didn’t want it for the world to see. So, just imagine it not being organized.

Basically, I used a vase (that I got for free!) because I figured it wasn’t uber feminine and added some nice height. Then I collected his colognes on a dish, put his loose change in a jar, neatly stacked his books and put some of his fun novelty stuff on display. It now looks like an intentional collection of things as opposed to piles of stuff collecting dust.

I should also say that usually I am not the person to invade his space without him knowing. I figured I didn’t throw anything away without his permission and I was just making it look better. Thankfully, he agreed and was OK with it. Your guy might not be as easy going about organizing his stuff… Just an FYI. :)

The other change was adding some shelves to highlight some of my favorite cookbooks. We finally also put up our shadowbox frames with souvenirs from our dinner at Bouchon in Yountville. One is a menu and the other, hard to tell, has a collection of business cards that you could hand stamp at the restaurant. Yes, I took four.

Have you all done any simple things lately to spruce up your space?

Free Christmas Cheer Art Print

You should know by now that Megan and I love Christmas. We especially love Christmas movies. One of my favorites is Elf, which is usually the first to be watched while we decorate the tree. So silly, so fun — I find myself laughing at the same jokes over and over.

“Santa’s coming! I know him! I know him!”

“These toilets are ginormous!”

“Is there sugar in syrup? Then yes!”

Of course, there’s one of my favorites that I always thought would be cool to have in a Christmas decoration. After seeing a couple around the internet, I just didn’t see any prints that I loved. So I made one. And since Christmas isn’t a time to be selfish, I thought I would share it with all my Elf loving friends.

Download the PDF by right clicking this link: Christmas Cheer Print and select “Save target as.” I hope you enjoy this! Even though it goes without saying, please use this for personal use only. Thanks!

Might I be lovingly blunt today? I’m not feeling a cutesy intro this week and my book is calling my name (reading “Scarlett” the sequel to “Gone With the Wind.” Very good!) So I leave with you these lovely links:

  • Free Festive Printables: If you don’t already follow Emily of Jones Design Company, you should remedy that. She is so generous in providing cute freebies, including these gift tags and this Christmas art print.
  • Potter Potions: Harry Potter fans, check out these cocktails inspired by Harry Potter characters. You better believe I’ll be sipping on one of these during my movie marathon.
  • Slave to Dry Shampoo: Please tell me I’m not the only one who has become dependent on dry shampoo. The kind I use now is friendly on the wallet, but not so much on the dark hair. Perhaps I’ll give this DIY dry shampoo a try.
  • Burlap Can Be Beautiful: Have you guys checked out Bobbi’s decorated Christmas tree? She, her husband and MIL recently completed their decor and I just love the burlap sash along with the glowing lights and bright red. I think I may have to try my hand at a tree sash one of these years.

How do you decorate for Christmas?

Semi DIY Glam Christmas Wreath

While I do miss my (now broken) easy DIY ribbon Christmas wreath that I made a couple years back, I was excited at the idea of making a new one. One of my favorite inspirations from Pinterest was this wreath:

I love to decorate with Christmas colors, but in non-traditional hues, so this candy apple/lime green was up my alley. Plus, those feathers are so fun and unexpected. In creating my wreath this year, as always, there’s a bit of a back story as to how it came to be.

Armed with the above photo on my phone, I headed to Joann’s and began the hunt. Originally, I wanted to copy the wreath closely. Yet, I was really disappointed with their wreath selection. The plain ones were so fake yet they wanted $20 for them. I found a good ribbon, but the feather selection that I liked most were greenish and kept blending into the greenery of the wreath. I ended up buying ribbon and feathers, but skipping the wreath.

I should note at this point Matt, who was nice enough to accompany me to the store after much begging on my part, asked why didn’t I just choose a premade wreath. My reply? “But there’s no DRAMA in any of these!” He suggested then that we could try the wreath store — huh? — or Target.

Bless his heart, Target had the perfect wreath for me. It practically called me by name and begged me to take it home. This is usually how I know which direction to go — the other wreaths didn’t “speak” to me, but this one was practically glowing. In the end, I’m glad I put my own spin on it.

The assembly was very easy, plus it’s totally removable, meaning I can switch it up over the years as I please.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 wreath
  • 3-4 yards of wire ribbon, about 2-3 inches wide
  • a few plumes of feathers, I used three
  • wire cutters

First, I trimmed the wire on the feather plumes down to about six inches. Using Katie Bower’s big fluffy bow tutorial, attach the ribbon bow to the wreath. Then, visualize where you’d like the ribbons to go and carefully jam them into the wreath below. (The base of my wreath was branches bound together, so it was easy to stick the wires in there.) Just like that, you’re done!

Happy wreath making!

This week has always seemed like the calm before the storm. You’re thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas, yet they are so far away that you don’t feel much pressure. Do any of you feel this way, too? I try to make my holiday decisions now — gifts, foods, parties and decorations — before every last drop of sanity is squeezed out of me. Let’s enjoy this time by seeing some of the best of the internet this week, shall we?

  • Cute Enough to Not Eat: We all love Bakerella and her amazing cake pop creations. She is a perfectionist in making cute pops, but this time she’s outdone herself. They’re so cute I don’t know if I would dare to eat one! Check out these Muppet cake pops! I’m partial to Miss Piggy because that used to be my nickname.
  • Diamond in a Trash Heap: My most prized possession is my engagement/wedding ring (I opted to just have one ring). If I don’t have it on, I can’t help but feel panicked that it is out of place. So what would you feel like if your ring was accidentally thrown away and now lies somewhere in a 9 ton pile of garbage? That happened recently to a couple in Florida. Read the amazing story here. My favorite part? When the husband said, “She’s the love of my life. That ring was meant for her and no one else.” Awww!
  • Cocktail (Cart) Anyone? Erin at Elements of Style put together a great collection of cocktail carts that I just love. My favorite is the more femininely styled silver cart, but click through to see the orange one that caught my eye, too.
  • Speaking of Cocktails: Add pomegranate to most any cocktail and I’ll be sure to drink it. So this Cranberry Pomegranate Margarita, by the husband of Tina at My Life as a Mrs., seems like the perfect drink to sip as we enjoy the week free from holiday pressures.

That’s it for this week. Enjoy!
