Spring Clothing Swap

Need to clean out some space in your closet? Want to add a few more things to your wardrobe for free? Accomplish both (although I make no promises about extra space in your closet) with a clothing swap with your friends. Bobbi invited me to a clothing swap with a few of her friends the other day, and I brought my sister (in law) along. The premise is simple: bring clothes you do not want, and swap them for your friends clothes that they do not want — but you do!

I have heard about these parties for a while, but this was the first time that I actually got to attend one. It was a lot of fun. We did not really have any rules, but I remember hearing about other parties that did.

Tips for a Successful Clothing Swap:

  • Bring clothes that you actually like (somewhat).  Something that you do not like from Aunt Suzie might be the best fit for your friend Jenna.  However, you want your clothes to be relatively free of stains and holes.  Remember that you want others to take your clothes, not pass by them in disgust!
  • Plan your guest list — we had around 12 and it seemed like a great number.  There was a large quantity of clothing, but we quickly ran out of space to display the items on.  If we had one or two more guests, it would have been okay, but many more would have just been too busy.
  • Set out an assorted array of appetizers and drinks. Finger foods are great for a party like this, because it keeps you free of a plate that you have to keep from dropping on clothes!
  • Make up your own rules. Like I said, we did not really have any rules and it worked out fine.  Some people have tickets, so you get a “ticket” for each item that you bring.  That way someone cannot show up with one item and take home twenty.  We had a nice group of women who were generous and not trying to sneakily steal a bunch of things.
  • Decide what to do with the leftovers.  We ended up with a few bags worth of extra items after everyone picked things out.  I happened to be having a garage sale, so the girls just let me take all the extras.  The other plan was to donate them to the Goodwill.

There you have it.  A fun way to get a whole new wardrobe — or at least a few cute new pieces!  Have you ever participated in one of these?  I highly recommend it!  If you want to see a few items that I brought — and left with, come back later today.

Tidying the Dining Room

I am learning that I need to align my priorities with Matt’s.  As his wife, I need to try my best to meet his needs, and he tries to meet mine.  A tidy house, free of clutter, is very important to Matt. If you know me (hey, Mom), you know that I tend to just drop things in places and forget of them.  The clutter quickly adds up.

One of Matthew’s major frustrations in the house was how quickly the dining room table became cluttered with stuff (purse, mail, recipes, etc.).  It is my desire to keep this area clean for Matt, but I slip back into old habits so easily.  I found an easy way to not leave things on the table though — keep the table set constantly!  The table then looks nice, and I will not be tempted to leave stuff on it.

These placemats and napkins were a wedding gift from my cousins -- perfect for our Tuscan theme!

When Matt came home and saw the table set like this, he was so excited!  He knew I was trying to keep it free from clutter and make his priorities important.  We actually use cloth napkins for dinner, as I think it is better for the environment.  We usually eat at this table, and re-set it after the meal is over.  Do you leave place settings up in your house?  What are some of your husband’s cleaning priorities?  Also, major thanks to Katie at Bower Power for the table setting inspiration!

Portion Control for Smart Snacking

I do not know about you guys, but I love snacks.  I could sit and eat Chex Mix and pringles all day long, and do not even get me started on chips with french onion dip.  Yum-O!!  Usually I am pretty good at not buying snacks though, so I am not tempted to eat them. But last week I was at the store and just craving some Doritos (PMS, anyone??) and they were on sale, so I got a bag.  However, after reading a chapter of Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness, by Candace Cameron Bure, I realized that I should not be eating snack food all the time.  What usually happens when I buy chips is that I eat the whole bag in a matter of days, mindlessly.  Candace talks about moderation, but not completely denying yourself of things.  I really wanted to throw out the whole bag of Doritos (because I know how bad they are for me), but felt like that would be a waste of money.  So instead, I made little baggies for the next 7 weeks with small portions on it.

With my weekly bags, I get a little bit of dorito action in my life, but I cannot fall into the habit of sitting down by the TV with an open bag — that is a disaster!  I also found a bunch of other snacks in the pantry that needed eating.  These were healthier things, like almonds, raisins and granola.  So I made a weekly bag with  a mix of these things, so that I will eat both the good (way more of it) and the bad.

I now have a little box of baggies for the next several weeks, and cleaned up some of the random bags of food in the pantry.  Check out how many bags are stacked up and ready for the trash can.  And that GIANT raisin bag is getting eaten, slowly.  Hopefully this exercise will encourage me to eat everything that I buy… the good and the bad.  How are you guys doing with healthy eating? Do you have any tricks for enjoying the things you love in small amounts?

Organizing Home: Recipe Cards

I was totally inspired by the organization posts last week.  You see, my recipes are in total disarray.  Some are in binders and some are in recipe boxes.  I have also scratched out many a recipe on the scrap piece of paper.

The cookbooks are nicely and neatly stacked.  The rest, however, is a disaster.  Can you see the mess of papers and notecards on the bottom shelf?  I will show you a close up…

Not pretty, huh?  What is crazy is that I have this awesome stash of blank recipe cards.  My goal is to write the recipes out on the spanking new cards in the next few days.  And the little clips, in the below picture — I want to use those to hang up my weekly meal recipes.  Not sure exactly how I am going to do that though!

How should I organize the written out recipes?  I was thinking of categories like Main Dish, Sides, Soups/Salads, Desserts (which I could break down into cookies, cakes, etc.), and Drinks.  Can you think of any other categories?  How do you organize your recipes?

Organized Home: Closet

I know I promised you all the end result of my closet clean-out from a while back. As I waited for the jewelry organizer to come in the mail, things got a little out of hand again.

To refresh your memory, here is the before pictures from a few months ago.

First, I got a new job. Yay! This new job has a pretty strict dress code and I can no longer get away with wearing jeans four days a week, let alone one. So I got some new clothes. Second, the holidays came and that’s my excuse for putting normal life on hold during the month of December.

I’m still trying to sift through my clothes and give away what I don’t use. Right now, the rod holding up all my clothes looks like it could snap at any minute and I hope to remedy that in the coming weeks.

Speaking of – has anyone had any success with selling clothes on eBay? Or anything on eBay?

Back to the organizing… I feel like everything wasn’t really in its best spot. Above, you’ll see that I have purses hanging on a multi-pair pant hanger. Good in theory, it was really bulky and taking up much-needed hanging space. The purses were much better stored up on the shelf.

Next to the purses you’ll see my little jewelry box. Yet, it was a pain to lift up and down and wasn’t really good at storing my long necklaces and wooden bracelets. Originally, I had planned to make one of these jewelry organizers, but time and efficiency won out and I scored a good one on Amazon.com.

The rest, like my earrings and fun rings, are stored in the jewelry box. Although, I pretty much rotate between a few pairs of earrings, so those are usually found in a cute dish on my nightstand. Also, don’t you love my perfume basket? It was a gift from my mom, who would always get after me for having a messy room. So it makes me laugh every time I see it. Sorry for being such a pain, mom!

On the opposite side, you’ll see the blankets have a new home next to the foot bath (another present from my mom – love that thing!). These are things that I only use every once in a while, which is perfect for the top shelf.

You’ll be happy to know that my cute shoes on display got a new friend to play with. I love my leopard print low wedges, a Christmas gift from Matt. As you’ll see from the slippers in the above pic and the robe in the “before” picture, I love me some animal print!

My other shoes I keep in one of those hanging racks. Oh hey, what do we have here? Oh, just my national championship medal (holla!) and my Foodbuzz name tag.

Some may think that I’m crazy for organizing my clothes by color, but it really helps when you’re putting an outfit together and finding a particular top.

So, that’s pretty much it. While it’s not necessarily my dream closet, it is much better than before. Until I happen to score a sweet deal on an Elfa or Ikea system on Craigslist, this will have to do.

What do you think?
