How To: Sew a Summer Bubble Skirt

I have been trying to make my own clothes for the past few months.  Skirts were an easy way to start.  I basically modified Dana’s tutorial for the first two, and then just went out on a limb and created my own for the third.  That’s what I am going to show you today.

This is a really simple skirt to make.  I’m sure someone else has already thought of this, but I have not seen it anywhere. This is actually similar to the same way that I make my coffee cozies, just on a much larger scale!

Craft Projects That are Works Still in Progress

Earlier this week, I talked about our entryway and shared some finished Ns. I wanted to give you all an update on crafty projects that I talked about last year.

Project Number 1:  Journals.  I scrapped this project.  I knew I would never finish them, so I just tossed them.

Project Number 2:  Wedding initials.  Done.   I showed my newsprint one earlier.  Here are the other two…

Project Number 3:  The beanie was unwound and I am currently making a bunny with it.  It was for Easter… maybe I will finish it by next Easter.

How to: Sew Holiday Hand Towels

A few weeks ago, as I was putting up my Easter decor, I realized that I had absolutely no Easter towels.  I thought I had little towels for every season to hang on the oven door, but I guess not!  I found some Easter fabric and plain towels in the craft room and decided to whip up these cute towels.  I wanted to share how you can make them, because it is super easy.  I am not claiming genius, as I know many people have made these before — but this is just my take on it!

Step One:  Pick out towels and cute fabric to match.  I usually find towels in the dollar aisle at Target.  Although, they do not stay long once they are there, so be sure and stock up!  Cut your fabric into strips (one strip per towel) about 5″ long and the width of the towel plus 2″ for neatness on the back.  So if your towel is 30″ wide, cut your fabric to a 30″ x 5″ strip.  Make sense?  Okay, moving on…

Step Two:  Fold your fabric in half and iron.  Then unfold and fold the two edges in to the middle ironed line (hot dog style) and iron.  That is how I did the white fabric.  You can see that below.  For the blue fabric I just ironed each side in about 1/2″ which created a much larger fabric strip.

Step Three:  Pin your fabric onto the towels.  You will be pinning it exactly as it will appear on the finished product, so make it nice!  I followed one of the lines on the waffle weave, to keep it nice and straight.  I forgot to take a picture of the back, but I will try and explain what  I did.  Fold the short side in on itself and then pin down.  It should create a crisp folded line on the back, and you will sew it down while you sew the front.  Put your last two pins right on the edge of the back folded part, this way you know to sew over the pins to catch the back part.  Make sense?

Step Four: Sew!  This is a really easy sewing project, perfect for beginners!  You will just sew about a 1/4″ in from the edges of the fabric on all sides.  I usually use the edge of my sewing machine foot as a guide, it is a little bit further than 1/4″ from the needle,  but it works for me.  Remember to go over those last needles, and then sew down the short side, so you catch that fabric on the back.  Just sew back and forth a bit at the beginning and end to knot the thread.

Step Five:  Admire your handiwork as you hang your towels on the oven door.  Give yourself a round of applause because you just created super cute decorations to last for years to come — in less than 15 minutes!  Woo hoo!

You can be creative and create towels like this for any season or holiday.  Your best bet will to make them this year — after each holiday.  That way you can get fabric on super sale!    Have you made any decor like this before? Any tips for making it easier?

How to Sew Fabric onto Cards

As I shared yesterday, I have a tender spot in my heart for Valentine’s Day.  This year, I made it my goal to learn how to make cards with fabric sewn on the front.  I had been wanting to do this for awhile, so Valentine’s Day seemed like the perfect occasion.

What to know how I did it? It is quite simple.

  1. Cut out fabric (I used my Sizzix cutting machine) into hearts, rectangles, squares, triangles, or whatever other shape you want.  Whatever scrap size you have is perfect.
  2. Start with the piece on the bottom and sew it around the edges onto an index card (ignore the left card in the picture above — that was messy).  Place your next scrap and sew it on.  Continue doing so until you are happy with the outcome.  You can alternate between straight and zig zag stitches.
  3. Rub glue on the bottom of the index card and place it on top of the folded card.  Sew it on (make sure the card is open, so you do not sew it shut).

That is it!  three simple steps and you are done!  Because you sew the scraps onto the index card first, all that you see on the inside of the folded card is the stitches around the index card.

I used fabric specific to each person that I made the card for.  My soccer loving husband got the soccer heart, I tried to make it manly, but I am not sure if I succeeded!  Did you make anything for your Valentine, or are you waiting for another special day (like your anniversary) to show them that you care?

Valentine’s Day Accessories

I admit it.  I like Valentine’s Day.  Yes, I had a few rough memories in elementary school, but the hopeless romantic in me loves a day that is about showing your true love that you care.  That being said, I do not think a dozen roses or a box of chocolates is how you do that (although it is a nice surprise every once in a while).  A quiet dinner together, doing the dishes without being asked, washing your car — those are all simple ways to show we care.  And let’s be honest — we should be doing these things every day!  As I got ready this morning, I did not want to wear pink or red (or a shirt about kissing — yes I used to have a few of those and loved wearing them on “singles awareness day,” as we called it), but just a normal outfit.  However, I did want to get a little festive and wore a heart covered headband.  If you remember, last year I made little heart earrings.

Toilet Paper = perfect headband holding stand!

I also wanted to let you all know that you rock!

That's me looking at your comments -- we love our readers!

If you wanted to know how I made the headband, fear not, I will tell you!  I took a plastic headband and covered it in yarn (color changing).  I would lay down about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch line of hot glue on the back, and then wrap, laying the yarn into the glue.  After that was done, I cut some hearts out of felt and hot glued them on as well.  Easy as pie!  I love the effect of the yarn wrapped headbands — so fun!

Did you wear anything festive today, or are you a Valentine’s Day hater?  You can also just be neutral and today is any other day, I guess!
