Little Kitchen Upgrades

Matthew made me a couple of items for our kitchen this Christmas and I really wanted to share them with you. I was all ready to post about the pots last week (remember when I said I had a project for later), but then he got the cabinet mounted to the wall, so I wanted to wait! Without further ado, my Christmas presents / kitchen upgrades:

The pots on the left are for spices. I have started growing chives, parsley, and basil in them. I was not sure if they would actually grow, since they do not get direct sunlight, but I hoped for the best. As you can see below, they totally started growing! There are tiny sprouts in each of them. Success! Matthew used leftover fence wood for the material and waterproofed them with red guard (usually used behind tile in showers). Total cost of this project – free (because all materials / screws / seeds / dirt was leftover from other projects). Yay! I am going to paint the names of the plants on soon, but I wanted to wait until they actually grew and we knew they were sustainable there. [The seed packets will then disappear.]

The spice cabinet is custom built for these awesome little spice jars (which we got for $1 at World Market). We are slowly buying more of them and transferring spices into them. I keep waiting for another $10 off $30 coupon, and a $10 reward for buying food there. Oh how I love rewards programs!

These little improvements have made all of the difference in our kitchen. I love the way that it is becoming our own home. Sure, we have had it for three years now, but each little improvement makes it feel so much more like home. I cannot wait until our spice cabinet is filled (which means we can get rid of the basket of spices to the right of the cabinet)! Yay! Do you store your spices in fancy jars, or just use what they came in?

Stay Stylish, My Friends

It’s an accepted idea that once you get married, you let yourself go. Gone are the days where you stay active and excitedly get dressed up for a night out with your sweetie. While no longer competing for his affections, it’s tempting to think that looking good matters less and less. I have a feeling guys fall into this trap, too.

Of course your spouse should love you no matter your appearance, but I’m convinced that staying at the top of your game can help keep that spark alive. I’m also convinced that when you’re looking your best, you’re feeling pretty good too. Here I use myself as an example:

This look can only be described as: meh. (You know, the sound you make when you shrug in indifference.) At my former job, we were very casual. As in, we wore jeans most days. Heck, I could even get away with wearing my Uggs to work. Over the years, I would wake up, look at my clothes, shrug and throw something together. I wouldn’t put much effort into doing my hair and my makeup wasn’t very interesting. I didn’t look bad, but now that I look back on it, I realize that my appearance showed my apathetic attitude.

Fast forward to now. Sure, the photo above is at our Christmas party this year and is therefore not quite an apples-to-apples comparison, but it’s an outfit that I’ll often wear to work. (The “everyday me” would involve adding a black cardigan and having straight hair.) I’m happy at my new job, which is one of the reasons why I’m no longer apathetic about how I look. Not to mention, our dress code is business casual and we get to wear jeans maybe once a year. I’ve had to update my wardrobe with dresses, skirts, dress pants and heels. I now style my hair every day and put effort toward my makeup.

While I used to think it wasn’t worth the effort, I now realize that it is. I can’t tell you how much better I feel about myself. While my wardrobe change isn’t the entire reason for feeling so great, I think it’s a good outward sign of being happier inside.

If I can do it, you can too! Here are some simple tips to updating your wardrobe:

  • Get inspired: When you notice a cute outfit on someone or while browsing through a catalog, make a mental note of what exactly made the outfit pop to you. Was it a pair of shoes, a piece of jewelry or a style of top? Keeping a list of these ideas will be a big help when it comes time to shop. I’ll be back later to share some of my favorite inspirations.
  • Pare down your casual clothing items: We’re talking T-shirts and jeans, mostly. You probably don’t need as many of them as you have. Keep only your favorites and donate the rest. For some shirts that you can’t part with: keep some for working out and get rid of the grubby ones.
  • Buy the basic staples and buy high quality items: For starters: get two pairs of work pants (one black and one gray, for example) and get two pencil skirts (these look good on most everyone and are now my favorite style of skirt). You’ll want these to last a while and get a lot of wear, so don’t go too cheap on these. Banana Republic has been having good sales lately, and I got a great pair of pants for $45 (originally $98). H&M also makes some good work pants and skirts.
  • Buy versatile items: Now when I go shopping, I ask myself if the item I like could be dressed up and down. Your best bets? Cardigans and loose button down blouses.
  • Don’t forget accessories: This is still a work in progress for me, but it can really make your outfit sing. While I’m willing to spend on my clothing staples, I find that I can save on my accessories by shopping at places like Forever 21 and Target.

One other tip I have is to pick out your clothes the night before so you’re not scrambling to come up with a good outfit. You could even plan your entire week’s outfit on a Sunday night if you’re an overachiever. ;)

Also, don’t feel like you need to be shopping all the time. I go shopping for clothes far less than I used to. I also am smarter about what I spend on (the dress above, for example, was only $20 at Target!). Once you have your basic staples, you will see how far they can go in your wardrobe.

Now that I’ve put the challenge out to the interwebs to look your best, I guess I really need to stay on top of my game!

Appreciating the Small Things

Overheard in the bar area of a restaurant:

Girl #1: “Life is good. Tom has been working hard and I’m enjoying my job, but I get really irritated because he folds the towels wrong.”

Girl #2: “Oh man, Johnny does that too. I get so irritated. I mean, if you are going to fold towels, then do it correctly.”

There was some mindless chatter (oh yeah and I totally made up those names); and then this middle aged business man stopped by their table and said this on his way out:

“Ladies. Sorry to butt in, but I just wanted to say that I have been married for 20 years and I am grateful for whatever my wife does that makes my life easier. If your biggest problem is that your husband folds your towels incorrectly, you should really appreciate that he is putting out the effort to fold the towels at all. I know my wife really appreciates it when I do.”

Bam! The guy was super sweet and just trying to be helpful, but it totally put them in their place. My Mom and I giggled, but then had the chance to talk about that very subject. How often do I gripe about the small things which Matthew does that are totally helpful? Often enough. He really likes to help out by doing laundry, and I have spent way too much of my time getting upset that he does not put fabric softener in the washer (or dryer) — but I really just need to appreciate that he is helping me out. I am going to try and appreciate what Matthew does and let him know how much it means to me. How can you let your husband know that you appreciate everything that he does, both big and small?

Favorite iPhone Apps

Can you remember life before smart phone apps? Me neither. :) I’ve had an iPhone for a couple years now and am still having fun finding new and useful apps. Perhaps my favorite is Instagram. Have you noticed? (When we post square photos with cool filters, they’re from Instagram. I’m @moemarsita if you wanted to “follow” me!)

Just for fun, I thought I would share my favorite apps. I’ve only bought an app once so far (picfx in case you’re wondering, although I was thisclose to buying I am T Pain), so these are mostly free. Yet, I received a $25 credit for the app store and I’m curious which paid apps you might recommend. So exciting!

Photography: Instagram, PicFX, Pic Stich

My iPhone has basically replaced my point-and-shoot camera. Instagram offers fun photo filters and is like Twitter, but with photos. (Can be used in conjunction with Twitter/Facebook.) PicFX cost me $2, but offers more photo filters and editing tricks. Pic Stich is a free collage program. I used it for all my pictures in this post!

Just for Fun: Pinterest, Starbucks, Red Fin

Y’all know how much I love Pinterest, so it’s no shock that I love the mobile version, too. Starbucks: I don’t go there often, but it’s great to not have to pull out my wallet and/or remember my card to participate in their rewards program. Plus, it’s super easy to reload. H&M is one of my favorite places to shop. Whenever I’m there, I just open the app and shake my phone and sometimes a coupon comes up. You can also see some of the new clothes they have. One of the better store apps, that’s for sure.

Useful: Onavo, Reminders, Check Please

Onavo is a lifesaver for me. I have to carefully watch my data usage, and by adjusting settings on Onavo, I can save MBs like whoa. If you dine out in groups often or you are horrible at calculating tips, let Check Please figure it out! I don’t know what I would do without Reminders. It’s available as a standard app when you update your iPhone to iOS5.

There are my favorites. What are yours?

Balsamic Chocolate Truffles

The bottle of balsamic from House of Balsamic has been staring at me for months now. I knew that I needed to create something amazing with it, but I just was not sure what. When Krissy posted this truffle recipe, I knew it was that something amazing!

Balsamic Chocolate Truffles
adapted (just barely) from Krissy’s Creations

  • 81/2 ounces Dark Chocolate, Chopped
  • 1/4 cup Heavy Cream
  • 4 – 5 teaspoons Balsamic Vinegar
  • 1/3 cup Cocoa Powder

Place the chopped chocolate and heavy cream in a medium bowl.  Place the bowl over a pot of lightly simmering water and melt the chocolate, stirring occasionally. I had a really hard time with this, but eventually it worked! Pour the melted chocolate into a small, shallow bowl, and stir in the balsamic vinegar. Transfer the bowl of chocolate to the refrigerator to cool until it has hardened, about 1 hour.  Remove the chocolate from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature until it is easily moldable. Place the cocoa powder in a small bowl.  Using a cookie scoop, scoop rounds of the chocolate into the palm of your hands.  Roll the chocolate into a round ball.  Place the chocolate ball into the cocoa powder and roll it around to completely coat it.  Repeat with the remaining chocolate. These truffles keep best in a sealed container in a cool area.  If left at room temperature, the truffles could soften.  You can also keep them in the refrigerator and then allow them to sit at room temperature for about 1 hour before serving. Krissy got this recipe from Giada De Laurentiis on Food Network.

These truffles were amazing! I was a little bummed that I could not taste the balsamic that much, so I might add more next time. I want to make more truffles, any other flavor suggestions?
