Portion Control for Smart Snacking

I do not know about you guys, but I love snacks.  I could sit and eat Chex Mix and pringles all day long, and do not even get me started on chips with french onion dip.  Yum-O!!  Usually I am pretty good at not buying snacks though, so I am not tempted to eat them. But last week I was at the store and just craving some Doritos (PMS, anyone??) and they were on sale, so I got a bag.  However, after reading a chapter of Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness, by Candace Cameron Bure, I realized that I should not be eating snack food all the time.  What usually happens when I buy chips is that I eat the whole bag in a matter of days, mindlessly.  Candace talks about moderation, but not completely denying yourself of things.  I really wanted to throw out the whole bag of Doritos (because I know how bad they are for me), but felt like that would be a waste of money.  So instead, I made little baggies for the next 7 weeks with small portions on it.

With my weekly bags, I get a little bit of dorito action in my life, but I cannot fall into the habit of sitting down by the TV with an open bag — that is a disaster!  I also found a bunch of other snacks in the pantry that needed eating.  These were healthier things, like almonds, raisins and granola.  So I made a weekly bag with  a mix of these things, so that I will eat both the good (way more of it) and the bad.

I now have a little box of baggies for the next several weeks, and cleaned up some of the random bags of food in the pantry.  Check out how many bags are stacked up and ready for the trash can.  And that GIANT raisin bag is getting eaten, slowly.  Hopefully this exercise will encourage me to eat everything that I buy… the good and the bad.  How are you guys doing with healthy eating? Do you have any tricks for enjoying the things you love in small amounts?

  1. I love that idea. That’s exactly what we should do. Portion it out first rather than letting your tongue decide when to stop. :)

I remember cleaning the kitchen once and I saw a bag of chips on the counter. The slogan came to mind, “Betcha can’t eat just one!”

I love that I was able to say, “Betcha I can!” (I said it out loud–lol) And rolled up the bag.

  2. Darlene, my tongue definitely won’t stop on its own! haha And great job rolling up the bag before eating “just one!” I”m so greatful for your book with Candace!
