Almost Bitten By the Baby Bug

Maybe the best way to start this post is to say that I’m not itching to have kids just yet. While I have always longed to be a mom, I’m enjoying this time with Matt and am not getting carried away by my desire to be a mom. Newlyweds are always asked when they will have kids. Have you noticed? Now that I have two nephews, I’m asked even more if I’ve been bitten by the baby bug. My honest answer is: not exactly. Cuddling with cute newborns and shopping for baby clothes isn’t what stokes the fire — it’s my husband.

Whoa, where did you think I was going with that transition? ;) Stick with me here, it’s a PG blog after all…

Matt and baby Elliot

You see, Matt doesn’t really have much experience with babies. He held tiny Elliot for a few minutes before he got bored and let the eager aunt and grandmas have a go. Ask Matt if he’s excited to be a dad and he’ll say “of course!” When you inquire further, he’ll say he can’t wait to coach his kid’s sports team and teach him/her how to do things. While I try not to press the subject, I can’t help but remind him that tee ball age is about five, so what’s he going to do before then?

Anywho, this past weekend when we visited my brother and sister-in-law, my nephew Austin warmed up to Matt. One morning, my 17-month-old nephew toddled past me and over to Matt with a stack of books that he wanted him to read. Another time Matt showed off his juggling skills which gave Austin the giggles. Matt happily pushed the stroller on our walk around the neighborhood, giving Austin a wild ride that he loved. The cutest instance, for me, was when Matt set up a new TV and, without adults prompting him, Austin ran over to his toy workbench and brought back a toy screwdriver to help put the TV together. It was the sweetest thing.

Later, Matt said he was a bit surprised at the fun he had with Austin. He simply wasn’t expecting it. As much as I try not to, I can sense that sometimes my love for babies and the yearning toward motherhood can cramp Matt’s style a bit. Truthfully, sometimes I push my desires to be a parent onto him out of a worry that he doesn’t share those desires at all. Yet, this weekend confirmed that not only does he in fact have those desires, he will be a great dad. In his own way and in our timeline, those things will come to fruition. No need to worry.

Presidents’ Day Fun

Happy Presidents’ Day! I’m off hanging out with a new member of the family, Elliot:

I got some fun time in with Austin too! Nephews are the best.

I hope most of you have the day off. In case you are, here are some fun things to do.

What are you up to today?

A Very NewlyWife Christmas

It was another NewlyWife reunion this weekend as Megan and Matthew came up to celebrate Christmas with the Northern California side of the family. The weekend included a trip to San Francisco’s Union Square, eating, gifting and playing games like Wits and Wagers. Oh, and there was a wrapping paper wad war or two. Here are some of the photos from the weekend.

Merry Christmas from your favorite (devil eyed possessed) bloggers.

My first Ramos Gin Fizz. Very tasty.

We can’t break tradition! Every year I leave out cookies for Santa and ever year they’re eaten.

We managed to squeeze in a picture with Santa and some more cousins.

Christmas morning with the holiday log on TV since our fireplace stopped working.

I made my own orange rolls, which are another family tradition.

Matt and I about to open our presents. My MC Hammer bobblehead photobombed in the background.

There were a few rounds of Wits and Wagers, the game of choice this year.

And I got a chance to see my little nephew, too!

It was a very merry Christmas — one of the best yet! We hope yours was great as well!

NewlyWife Likes #18

This week I’m breaking all the rules and switching things up for this edition of NewlyWife Likes. I’m such a rebel! This week is all about Southern California, which is where I went on a last-minute visit last weekend. It was such a fun trip that I couldn’t help but share. First, we’ll start with the links.

  • Battle of the ‘Cals’: It’s so appropriate for the writer of this post on Los Angeles I’m Yours to compare Northern California and Southern California to the Capulets and Montagues. So many of my Nor Cal folks have stereotypes against the other half of the state. This writer debunks those myths and it makes me feel more reasonable to like both sides. (Beautiful image above via Los Angeles I’m Yours.)
  • Having a Blast in the OC: I always find it fun to read city guides on blogs, particularly those for the areas that I know pretty well. Seem weird? I just want to make sure I’m not missing out on some must-see stuff in my area. Consider this guide to the OC from Design*Sponge, and be sure to check out the rest of them in their archives.
  • Where we Went: My mom and I had an unplanned day of shopping and eating. It was great! We started the day at the antique shops at the Orange Circle in Orange, then went to lunch and more browsing at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, made a quick stop at Han’s Homemade Ice Cream in Santa Ana, and ended the night at Uva Bar in Downtown Disney in Anaheim. And you can’t forget brunch at El Torito Grille on Sunday, complete with waffle boats!

Thanks for indulging in my mini-vacation recap! Also, look how cute my little nephew is! Okay, I’m done bragging now. :)

A Beverly Hills Bouchon Bakery Pit Stop

Welcome back from the holiday weekend! How was yours? Mine was spent down in So Cal helping this little guy celebrate his first birthday!

I also was able to see some other friendly faces, including this one you might recognize…

I hitched a ride with my parents and on a tip from my cousin Rebecca, we made a pit stop at the newly opened Bouchon Bakery in Beverly Hills. Matt and I had dinner at the Bouchon Bistro in Yountville earlier this year, but we weren’t able to make it to the bakery. Thankfully, my parents were up for the detour, even though it added over an hour to our trip.

We went a little crazy and got a few TKO cookies (like fancy Oreos), a peanut butter, and an oatmeal raisin for my dad, plus a couple of macarons.

Of course, I busted out my phone to take pictures like a crazy super fan. Sorry they aren’t better quality, it was hard to keep my phone still since I was shaking with excitement.

I was tempted to pick up a travel mug, but they were pretty pricey for someone who doesn’t really drink coffee. :)
