NewlyWife Likes #25

Parties are apparently on the brain. Not only do a lot of my “likes” this week have to do with parties, I’m realizing that the next several weekends will be filled by going to or preparing to host parties. I’m tired already just thinking about it! So much to do and so much fun to be had.

  • C’mon Get Chatty: No need to feel nervous in a crowd of new people at a party this year. Joanna at a Cup of Jo has some great tips on how to talk to strangers at parties.
  • Drink the Plank: Claire at Camille Styles came up with a unique DIY wine rack that is like a display for your favorite wines. It looks easy enough if you have access to the tools.

  • The Braided Sweep: I am so down with this awesome updo from Beth of B. Jones Style. Perfect for going out to a party or out shopping.
  • Tupperware Tattoo: Don’t worry about losing your baking dishes after the potluck — etch your name on it like a pretty and practical ID tag. Check out this tutorial over at the Silhouette Blog. Although, I think it could be done without the fancy machine, too.
  • Movember Lives On: Have any of your guys embraced Movember with a mustache this month? It can live on with this Jonathan Adler corkscrew — even though it’s out of stock and expensive…

That concludes this week’s installment. Is there anything that you’re particularly loving on the web this week?

NewlyWife Likes #10

Newlyweds and veteran old married folk will definitely remember the fair share of marriage advice they recieved when engaged. Some was solicited, some not. Some useful, some not. One of my favorite pieces of advice was about how you will always feel like you’re giving more than you get — otherwise known as the 90-10 rule.

This week’s NewlyWife Likes will start off with some interesting advice, from experts and from someone who isn’t even married yet. Then, of course, we’ll throw in some fun stuff like always.

  • Ask the Experts: Glo has compiled advice from marriage experts asking them to share with couples The One Thing You Should Know About Marriage. Advice ranges from “make it a choice” to “don’t cohabitate.” It all begs the question though, is there really an “expert” at marriage to be giving advice?
  • Consider the Non-Expert: You may have heard of Donald Miller, the author of “Blue Like Jazz.” He recently wrote marriage posts on his blog — one directed at men, the other at women — on how to improve your marriage. People took issue over one tiny detail … he isn’t even married yet, just engaged. Jo Hilder at Burnside Writers was one person took issue with this, and Miller’s posts have since been removed. She had some interesting things to say, including this snippet:

“The point is, you can speculate all you like about what you think your challenges in a marriage are likely to be, and prepare diligently for that. But not all the terrible things we went through were caused by things we could have foreseen. … The good parts of our marriage were not always a direct result of something we did that was right. The bad parts of our marriage were not always a direct result of something we did that was wrong.”

  • Hanging With Ms. Coop-er: Okay, that was really a bad little lead-in. Basically, the awesome Karen (whose last name I don’t think is Cooper) of The Art of Doing Stuff has finally finished her chicken coop. To be honest, I know she had worked a long time on it and didn’t really expect much. These chickens got the hook up! Check out her amazing coop! Almost makes me want chickens. Almost.

  •  Party On, Wayne: At our Christmas Party, we had a fun photobooth with fun masks. Here are some more FREE ones, that can spice up any get together. Or, just bring them for the office. :) Thanks to Oh Happy Day for these and more freebies!

Adding Personality to Wedding Details

What’s a wedding if it doesn’t have personality? In my opinion, adding personal touches to your wedding day is what will make it truly special for you and your guests. Share some of your favorite things in the ceremony, music, decor, food — everything! One way to make sure you put your mark on your day is by challenging convention. Are you doing something because you have to or because you want to? Granted, this isn’t an excuse to be selfish, so be sure to involve your groom and even family and friends.

Ultimately, you can’t be afraid to be yourself on your wedding day! Forget trying to outdo someone else or pretend you’re someone you’re not. I may have had a wedding dress on, but I was still myself, fist-bumping with my dad like it was any old day. :)

Our wedding programs -- printed at home!

Here are some ideas that we came up with to share our personality with our wedding guests.

Wine Ceremony

Matt saves my dress from a wayward drop of wine!

Instead of a unity candle, we decided to pour two wines into a glass to create a blend that we each drank from. It was fitting for our winery wedding and because wine is such a growing passion of ours.

This was following us around all day. Jealous?

I’m really just posting the above picture because it was so awesome. There were a couple guys with this cart of food and drinks following the bridal party around to make sure we were happy. Boy, to have something like that all the time! If you can make something like this happen at your venue, do it!

Dotted Circle Theme and Frisbee Favors

For some reason, we were just drawn to a theme of circles and dots. This branding of sorts was found on our paper goods — invitations, programs, place cards — and even on our cake and our Frisbee favors. I bought it as a vector from istockphoto.com and it really came in handy.

Our wedding programs -- printed at home!

Notice the circle logo on our programs. The top one even had a rhinestone. You know I love me some bling! The dotted circles were actually done with a stamp. The one I bought had a dot in the middle, so I just carved out the rubber until I had the perfect stamp.

Our sparkly blue wedding favors -- Frisbee!

Now, I mentioned in another post that these Frisbee favors weren’t the most affordable option. Being Ultimate Frisbee players, we couldn’t just give out those cheaper options. These guys were made by Discraft and were the 175 gram weight. They were such a hit that some of our friends even tossed them outside for a while. We’re glad people would get use out of them and that they should bring smiles when they do.

Unique Table Numbers and Guest Book

Originally, I thought we would skip a guest book. I knew that a book of signatures wouldn’t really be opened maybe more than once after the wedding. So we made a book through Blurb using some of our engagement photos. It also allows people to leave messages instead of just their names. One issue we ran into was smudging of the ink on the pages, so make sure to get quick-drying ink pens.

Make your guest book fun!

We used pictures again when making our table “numbers.” Each table had a name, mostly having to do with Ultimate Frisbee. Below, you’ll see The Peaches, comprised of me and two bridesmaids. We are a little team all our own. On the back, there was better explanation of what it meant. This allows your guests who may have no clue what your interests are — no, Ultimate Frisbee is not a game with baskets or dogs — to learn more about it. In case they’re curious about other terms or stories, they could just mingle at the table next to them.

Our table numbers shared photos and stories from our time together.

In the background, you’ll also see part of our centerpieces. It was a circular candle holder from CB2.com. I can get into these in another post. So stay tuned!

Integrate Your Favorite Things

While a wedding is about getting married to the love of your life, it’s also a big party. I figured, if I’m going to be spending money on “wedding stuff” it may as well be stuff that I like and would use again.

Gotta have a little bling!

My wedding shoes, bought on sale at Macy’s, have some bling and are a beautiful gray/silver color. I’ve used them again and again. I loved seeing other brides wear bright colored shoes, ones with patterns and sometimes even sandals.

A little fuel for the bridal party!

Regular readers may know my love for Go Girl energy drinks. Sure, they’re silly, but they’re a treat that gives me pick-me up. Plus, my bridesmaids love them too, so it was a great way to start off the wedding day.

It's too cute to toss.

Continuing with my love of bling, I fell in love with this garter. Sparkly, blue and feathery it’s just so glamorous. Too bad I didn’t think ahead and I never saw it again after Matt shot it into the crowd. But at least I have a picture! If you’re wanting a unique garter or another wedding item, consider checking out Etsy.com or try making your own.

Classic Car Getaway

Sure, a lot of people use classic cars as a getaway car, but ours was different. My parents own a couple of woodie cars and are in a car club solely dedicated to the iconic surf car, so I was really happy to be able to ride in style. My dad transported the girls from the hotel to the venue and Matt and I from the wedding to the hotel. My brother also used it for his wedding.

Me with the family car, a woodie!

I hope that our personal touches put into our wedding day can inspire you for yours! How did you infuse your wedding with personality?

This site has been a gold mine for party décor ideas, especially for an upcoming baby shower I’m helping to host. No, it’s not for me (duh) or Megan. Her parties have personal and unique elements that give us a glimpse into her creativity. Thankfully, she gives us a peek and tells us how she does it.
